Erica Greve, Unlikely Heroes, accepts Golden Goody Award at Girl Rising Screening - Goody Awards

The Goody Awards recognized Erica Greve, Unlikely Heroes Founder, with a Golden Goody Award for her anti-human trafficking efforts and global rehabilitation programs for girls at a special “Girl Rising” screening at USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism on April 18, 2013.

Net Impact LA President Brandon Smith nominated Erica Greve, who accepted the award via satellite in the Philippines where she has been running rehabilitation programs for girls with a US team of therapists. She was selected for the Golden Goody Award not only because of her great mission, but because her work supports the “Girl Rising” goals to “Change minds, change lives and change policy.”

Erica’s 1-minute video had everyone standing still, “Thank you for recognizing me and the efforts of all of us who are working so hard to rescue children out of sex slavery and to see an end to human trafficking…. We just spent a week with the child victims that we’ve been able to rescue for the past 1 ½ years out of brothels here in the Philippines….By the time they left, you could see the healing and breakthroughs on their faces.”

Unlikely Heroes exists to rescue, restore and rehabilitate child victims of sex slavery and other forms of human trafficking through the implementation of restoration homes and rescue and prevention programs worldwide. Their work is essential to re-building girl’s self-esteem, confidence and the economy.

This lifetime achievement award for social good is given on rare occasions at live events as part of Goody Awards cause marketing campaigns. Previous winners have included Louie Psihoyos, Academy Award winner and Director of “The Cove”, Producer Lucy Webb from Women In Film in Park City at the Sundance Film Festival, and Anna Cummins, 5 Gyres Founder.

This Golden Goody Award is part of the Goody Awards #GirlEmpowerment Campaign (April/May 2013), which will include live events, press releases, social media, weekly Girl Empowerment videos, and media coverage of this important topic impacting millions of girls worldwide.

We support Unlikely Heroes mission and the “Girl Rising” goal to “Educate a Girl, Change the World” as part of our focus on women empowerment. Educating girls is a hug issue that needs global attention. Did you know 66 million girls ages 5-18 are out of school worldwide, 14 million girls under 18 will get married this year, which is 38,000 girls married today and 13 girls married in the last 30 seconds? The more you tweet with #GirlRising #GirlRisingLA #UnlikelyHeroes and share the stories of heroes helping to change these numbers, the closer we can get to changing this story.

Thank you Erica Greve and the Unlikely Heroes team for all that you do, and thank you to everyone behind “Girl Rising”, USC Annenberg, Goody Awards, Net Impact LA, Net Impact USC Marshall for continuing this movement through film. Go see “Girl Rising”, sign up to host a screening and join this girl empowerment movement!

Human trafficking is "the recruitment, transport, transfer, harboring or receipt of a person by such means as threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, or fraud or deception for the purpose of exploitation." But it also has another name: modern day slavery. There are now more slaves in the world today than any other time in human history. The most conservative figures available suggest that more than one million children are involved in the sex trade each year, but experts say the true number could be five times that or more. Additionally, profits from sex slavery exceed $9.5 billion annually. This is not just a problem of the developing world: it is a global crisis, and includes the United States. In fact, conservative numbers estimate that there are more than 100,000 children sold for sex in the U.S. each year.

About Unlikely Heroes
Unlikely Heroes is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and restoration of children who were previously sold for sex in the US and abroad. Unlikely Heroes currently operates a restoration home for child survivors of sex slavery in the Philippines. The Unlikely Heroes home in the Philippines has become an oasis of hope and healing to the child survivors who are now living in safety and receiving the life skills, job training, education, and therapeutic treatment services they need to recover. According to local officials, Unlikely Heroes is one of the first organizations to provide any type of support services to child victims of sex slavery in this area of the Philippines. Unlikely Heroes also provides street-level support services to the victims of commercial sexual exploitation in the San Francisco Bay area. Each week, Unlikely Heroes team members reach out to children trapped in commercial sexual exploitation in the San Francisco Bay Area and provide help for victims at street-level. Unlikely Heroes is also in the midst of pioneering additional rescue and restoration projects internationally.

Founder, Erica Greve, MSW, first came into contact with domestic minor sex trafficking victims while working at a hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area more than 5 years ago, and founded Unlikely Heroes in response the great need for rescue and restoration services for child victims of sexual exploitation in the US and abroad. Greve is passionate about creating ways for people to get involved and to volunteer for social justice causes and regularly speaks on these issues.

While the home itself is a place of healing simply by its very existence as a haven protecting children from a life of prostitution, Unlikely Heroes recognized the necessity of giving these children training for how to cope with their feelings, as well as skills to continue the healing process on their own. In March 2012, Unlikely Heroes sent a team of three licensed therapists and five lay counselors, all from the United States, to provide the girls living in the restoration home with clinically sound therapy. The Unlikely Heroes team is working tirelessly the help children who were previously sold for sex in the US and abroad to receive the help they need to recover and receive a second chance for life.
